WHERE WE WORK
Ethiopia is one of Africa’s largest and fastest-growing countries – yet still one of the poorest. Since the famine of the 1980s, when Live Aid shone a global spotlight on Ethiopia, there has been real progress but food insecurity, unemployment, climate shocks and conflict continue to hit the poorest and most vulnerable people the hardest. In a population of around 130.5 million people, about 38.6% live on less than $3 a day. That’s more people living in poverty than the entire population of Australia, almost twice over. Ethiopia is a country of vibrancy and potential but, without change, communities remain trapped and each generation inherits the same cycle of poverty.

Forty years ago, 9 in 10 girls experienced harmful traditional practices like Female Genital Mutilation. Today that figure has fallen to around half.
Maternal deaths - once some of the highest in the world - have dropped from 953 per 100,000 live births (2000) to 195 (2023).
School enrolment is increasing. Once, 81% of children were out of school. Now it’s dropped down to 11%.
Change like this doesn't happen overnight. But these shifts show that this work being done - this work you can support - is not only saving lives today but changing the course of generations.
